Chiefs Reach an Agreement With Larry Johnson

"Johnson will remain suspended for two weeks, but it will cost him just one weekly paycheck, rather than two. NFL players are paid on a 17-week calendar during the season, so L.J. will be out $267,647, rather than double that amount."

Entire story from Bob Gretz

Wow. Maybe LJ is not a out for good. Pretty Surprising that Todd and Scott would allow this.

Why The Chiefs Will Turn It Around

You were probably chuckling as you read this headline and probably have a smirk on your face right now. That's OK. The Chiefs performance has not warranted a better response.

Lets go back to last year (as painful as that sounds.) Its week 8 and the Chiefs have just been blown out by the Titans 34-10. Larry Johnson has been suspended and the Chiefs ball control / running game plan was anything but that.

Something had to change. The Chiefs had to open up the offense and with a tough road game coming up against the red hot Jets, that's exactly what they did. With no LJ and a scat style runner as the starter (Jamal Charles), the Chiefs went to the shotgun. The results were 280 yards passing by Tyler Thigpen, 102 receiving yards by Dwayne Bowe and 80 yards rushing as a team. The Chiefs continued that success throughout the rest of the year. It wasn't until they had already emplamented a new style of offense, 4 games later, that LJ was able to come in and run because the defense had to actually defend the pass.

You can argue that the Chiefs still lost those games, but I can assure that Todd Haley and the better conditioned squad of this year, will not blow the second half leads that the Chiefs of 08' did. Todd Haley up to this point has had a few questionable calls, but nothing close to the sideline blunders that we witnessed last year.

See, without LJ, the coaching staff becomes more creative. They know that there is no power running game and I believe it creates more opportunities for the other players. You might ask "If it was that easy, then why don't they always run a pass oriented offense?" Plain and simple, LJ just doesn't fit into a shotgun / pass oriented offense. His pass blocking isn't great and although he can catch, he's not quick out of the backfield or out of passing routes. He comes out almost every time the offense passes. Talk about being predictable.

I think it's very difficult to manage a player with Larry's paycheck, ego, and skill. Especially when you don't have the type of personnel that a player like that needs to be successful. As a coach, I think that you probably want it to work out. You want a power running game, you want a happy LJ, and you want to take a guy that people have said is "not the same" to flourish.

All in all, this is a HUGE weight off of the back of the Kansas City Chiefs. I think you will see a much better offensive output then what you have seen lately and I do believe that the Chiefs will win the next two games at Jacksonville and at Oakland, after the bye week. At 3-6 with Pittsburgh coming to Arrowhead, the skies will look a lot brighter than they do right now. If KC ends up with 5 wins, I'll consider it a turn-around for the season and the franchise. Sad but true.

Chiefs Work Out Two Defensive Tackles Today

Bill Williamson of ESPN.com is reporting that the Chiefs worked out Shaun Smith and Terdell Sands today at DT. I would actually be excited if the Chiefs were to sign Shaun Smith. The guy is an absolute beast. He is not signed right now because... well, lets just say he's missing a few screws.

He punched Brady Quinn in the face (I know) and didn't even make it through Lions training Camp because of personality conflicts. I'm just gonna go out on a limb and say that Haley won't take any crap from him. All in all, probably not a guy Pioli goes after unless he aced the interview, had an outstanding workout, and doesn't mind riding the bench behind Ron Edwards.

As far as Terdell goes, I know three things about him: The Chiefs drafted him in 2001 out of Tennessee-Chatanooga , he is a ridiculously, monstrous 6'8 355 pounds, and he played for the Patriots at one point.

Hey LJ! If We Can Lose With Ya, We Can Lose Without Ya!

"The Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League are continuing to investigate the alleged comments made by Larry Johnson. Until that review is complete, the Chiefs have instructed Larry to refrain from practicing with the Chiefs or participating in other team activities. A decision regarding Larry’s status will be made once the investigation has concluded."

I would be very surprised if Larry Johnson plays another down as a Kansas City chief. As you all know, this is just the tip of the iceberg for LJ. This is exactly the opposite type of player that Scott Pioli wants on his football team and if Kolby Smith does anything exciting during the Jacksonville game, that should be the nail in the coffin for LJ's days as a Chief.

The worst part of all, is the fact that Todd Haley has shown more belief in Larry Johnson than any coach that he has played for in the NFL. The fact that Larry continues to dis him after games on twitter, ( remember the "ego" tweet) suggests that Larry could care less about anything, except LJ.

All I have to say is that LJ should have took the diapers off when Dick told him to.

BAD! BAD! BAD!

By far, the worst performance of the season. A hungry Charger team came into Arrowhead in a must win situation and completely dismantled the Chiefs 37-7. I'll get the positives out of the way first......the Chiefs ran for 121 yards. OK, now that we're done with that, lets talk about the game.

We can talk about how the Chargers had 403 total yards to the Chiefs 203. We could also talk about the blown coverages by Richardson that allowed over 100 yards in 2 plays, but to me, the game changed in the Chiefs second possession after half. Haley calls up an excellent play with Jamal Charles one on one with a rookie safety and if Matt Cassel gets the ball anywhere close to the wide open Charles, its a score and the Chiefs are down by 6. The pass turned out to be one of the worst passes I've ever seen as it sailed 15 yards from the target, out of bounds. Matt Cassel continues to prove his doubters right with the inability to throw the deep ball accurately.

The next play was another awful pass to a wide open Bobby Wade that turned a possible TD into an 18 yard gain. Eventually Sean Ryan gets hit in the chest with the ball, San Diego picks it off, The Chiefs don't see the ball past the 50 ever again.

Matt Cassel finished 10 for 25 for 95 yards and 3 picks. Need I say more? I'm not gonna beat a dead horse here. Bottomline: The Chiefs have two weeks to figure it out before they go into the easier part of their schedule with Jacksonville and Oakland lined up after the bye.

All we can hope for at this point is improvement.

Practice Update 10/22

“I like the rain,” Haley said afterwards. “It was pretty pleasant out there today. These are conditions that we have to play in. Days like today, being a wide receivers coach for so long, you kind of wanted days like this to really concentrate. I loved windy days and rainy days as a receivers coach because it required great concentration to get the job done.

Bob Gretz Practice Report

Chiefs Offensive Line In Big Trouble If They Cant Get Healthy by Sunday!

Well, we all know that Branden Albert is injured. Even though Haley says "It's like night and day" compared to last week, all Albert has done is jog this week. His ability to play on sunday doesn't look good.

Brian Waters didn't participate fully in practice until today and although his ankle injury wasn't reported as a serious injury, it still doesnt look good when you factor in the rest of the line woes.

Even Mike Goff didn't practice yesterday for "personal reasons." Injury or not, bad time to miss work, Mike.

To top it all off, Ryan O'Callaghan went down this week with a shoulder injury and is listed as a "limited participant."

That's 4 out of 5 offensive lineman that missed practice this week! For a line that has looked like nothing less than a project this season, this obviously doesn't make matters any better.

The Chargers don't have the pass rush that they once had, but with LJ averaging under 3 yards a carry, It's not looking too good for our beloved Chiefs on Sunday.

Derrick Johnson Was Never Going To Be Traded and He Doesn't Seem Very Happy About It.

Kent Babb had this to say on Twitter: "You can read more about this later in the wk, but here's the quick version: The Chiefs did NOT actively try to trade DJ, Dorsey or Bowe."

Great Kent, but heres the problem. It just so happens that DJ decided to blow his stack the day following the trade deadline. "It sucks," Johnson said. "It kind of sucks to not be starting and not be playing like I should. I should be out there playing. I should be out there starting. I should be out there helping this team win."

Does Haley know this?

"Coach knows I want to play," he said. "He knows I disagree with not playing. He knows that."

Well at least there isn't any Dorsey drama.

Chiefs Trade Dwayne Bowe? Thats What Haley Told Him!

An Unknown league source stated on Monday that Todd Haley actually threatened to trade Dwayne Bowe during Sundays game in Washington, if his play didn't pick up.

As per the source, this is what prompted Bowe to turn out the 109 yard performance that he did.

From third string in the pre-season, threatening a trade now, and every verbally and mentally abusing thing that Haley could do in between, it appears that the fire will not stop for Dwayne Bowe.

Hopefully this is a wake up call and Bowe does not need this kind of motivation in the future. On the other hand, if Bowe continues to put up 100 yard days, Haley might be the one with the attitude adjustment. It's not exactly a privledge for a guy like Bowe to be a Chief right now.
